TASK 5
AUDIENCE PROFILING
Audiences can be segmented in other ways as well as the socio-economic model above:
- Age
- Gender
- Demographic (where the audience live)
- Profiling (this is often done by advertisers to identify ‘types’ of consumers)
- Values, attitudes and lifestyles (in other words the types of products which are likely to appeal to those with these values, attitudes and lifestyles.
Watch a series of adverts and identify as accurately as possible the target audience for each, provide a link and give explanations to back up your conclusions about why the advert appeals to the specific demographic.
CADBURY’S GORILLA ADVERT
The target audience for this advert can go from young ages to older ages, maybe around 10-55. The reason for this is mainly because the advertisement easily makes families as well as elderlies entertained. Children usually find silly things hilarious, explaining the gorilla playing the drums. Adults could easily find the advertisement humorous and what could grab their attention even more is the song choice. ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins was and still is a popular song. This advertisement is targeted to all genres and they could live anywhere and still want to buy it. Its a chocolate bar so you could buy it from any shop.
JOHN LEWIS CHRISTMAS ADVERT 2014
The target audience for this advert could be aged from 5-30. The reason I say up to thirty is mainly because parents of a young child may find it adorable and it may even encourage them to visit John Lewis. Children from five and over have such a pure imagination that you can imagine them begging their parents to go and purchase such things as the penguin toy shown in the advert. This advert appeals to all genders as children of all genders can have such a wild and pure imagination. With adults, I think women may be more interested in the advertisement than men but I still believe men would be interested in it after seeing it. Demographically, I think this would appeal to the audiences who live in town. John Lewis shops are usually placed in quite busy areas, so I think that the people who are around those areas usually the ones who visit there.
SKY MOVIES CHRISTMAS ADVERT 2014
The target audience for this advert could possibly be from the ages of approximately 5-18 and I say this because of the fantasy theme used. The advert is about a family in their living room watching Sky Movies as they are sucked into many different films. These films include:
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
- LEGO Movie
- Frozen
This advertisement is also targeted to all genders. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is mainly targeted towards boys. ‘LEGO Movie’ is targeted towards both genders due to it including childhood toys. ‘Frozen’ is mainly targeted towards girls. That’s mainly why I believe this advertisement is targeted to all genders since it includes clips of all these movies. Demographically, I think this would appeal to the audiences who live anywhere but own Sky or a TV. Even though ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is rated 12, the advert is targeted towards families. Spider-Man was used mainly because its a superhero movie, so it doesn’t include much violence.
